Legislation to crack down on human trafficking in Florida zoomed through two Senate committees this week, passing the Criminal Justice and Judiciary committees on unanimous votes.

Sen. Randolph Bracy, of Orlando, is the sponsor of CS/HB972 that provides a civil cause of action for human trafficking victims against businesses that knowingly allow human trafficking to occur on their properties.

The legislation was amended to include language related to prohibiting internet service providers from notifying customers who are targets of subpoenas that law enforcement is seeking their information. Law enforcement supports this change as a way to bolster investigations into online child predators.

The Senate Appropriations Committee is the next scheduled stop for the bill. The House companion bill (HB 1165) is on the House calendar.
