Week 2 of the Legislative Session was a very active one for the Florida Justice Association lobbying team. We successfully beat back last-minute amendments supported by powerful Fortune 500 companies that would have ended carrier-paid attorneys’ fees in workers’ compensation and would have loosened liability laws regarding robot cars on our roads.\
We also engaged on legislation in the House related to Assignment of Benefits and continue to hold the line in defense of this important property right for homeowners.
Entering Week 3, we are working to move forward legislation to allow prejudgment interest on personal injury cases and repeal the special tobacco bond law enjoyed by the cigarette makers. We are also preparing for action on our responsible roadways agenda items including promoting personal responsibility among drivers by enhancing financial responsibility minimums by implementing bodily injury liability insurance.
It is an exciting time to be in Tallahassee. Supporters of corporate Florida and the insurance companies are complaining loudly about the influence of trial attorneys at the Capitol. That’s thanks to the strong commitment you have made to the FJA over the years.
We thank you for your involvement and welcome you to come to Tallahassee to lobby our lawmakers with our team. We certainly would like you here and have seen some of our greatest successes when lawmakers see a friendly face from back home.
